Free Bike Rides in Cuenca. Every Sunday you can ride a mountain bike in Cuenca for free. Just east of Solano on the north side of the rio Tomebamba the city makes mountain bikes available to ride along the Tomebamba bike trail between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM. This also includes a free helmet to use. The route goes east along the river trail, from El Vado bridge to Ciudadela de los Ingenieros.
There are about 100 bikes available and they’re all the same size, 26″. The bikes are available for 5 hours which is a pretty long time, so if you aren’t one of the first ones there you can probably catch the second, third, or fourth wave on the same bike as they become available.
The bikes are brought in from somewhere in Cuenca by truck for the occasion and then taken back to storage after it’s over.
Update: The city of Cuenca, through the Empresa Municipal de Movilidad (EMOV EP), has purchased 30 new children’s bicycles, adding to the 100 adult bicycles that are already a part of the City’s Ruta Recreacional project. The additional bicycles are designed for children and adolescents from two to 14 years of age.
If you’d like to take the bus to get there here are the bus routes.
