One of the traditions in Cuenca involves graduation, Carnaval and the Río Yanuncay. Every year at this time hundreds of school kids meet up at the Río Yanuncay around noon time on a Friday.
From what I understand it marks the end of the school semester and graduation. Water is very much a part of Carnaval so that comes into play too.
All these things converge at the Yanuncay. If you’re one of these school kids and you show up there you’re going in the river, school uniform and all. It’s a rite of passage that I’m sure goes back many years.
Scenes like this will be happening at our rivers for the next week or so but nothing on a scale like this that I’m aware of. Looks like fun.
